Planning to visit Phu Quoc between May and October and wondering if snorkeling is still worth it?

The short answer is yes.

While many travel guides claim that snorkeling isn't possible during the rainy season, that's not entirely true. The southwest monsoon changes sea conditions around the island, making some famous reefs inaccessible, but it also shifts the best snorkeling to more sheltered locations where the water often remains calm and surprisingly clear.

After guiding hundreds of snorkeling tours throughout the year, we've learned that successful snorkeling during the rainy season isn't about hoping for perfect weather - it's about choosing the right reef on the right day.

Rather than following the same itinerary year-round, we select snorkeling sites based on wind direction, sea conditions, underwater visibility, and guest safety. That's why our rainy season routes are completely different from those we use during the dry season.

Why Snorkeling Changes During the Rainy Season

One of the biggest misconceptions about snorkeling in Phu Quoc is that the rainy season means poor underwater conditions. In reality, the weather isn't the deciding factor, wind direction is.

From May to October, the southwest monsoon creates rough seas around many of the exposed southern reefs, including Hon Kim Quy, Bat Reef, and the May Rut Islands. Large waves make these locations uncomfortable and, more importantly, unsafe for snorkeling. Rather than attempting to reach exposed reefs, experienced local guides simply move to more sheltered locations, where guest safety always comes first.

The southwest monsoon also brings nutrient-rich water from the open sea, increasing the concentration of plankton in exposed areas. While these nutrients are essential for maintaining healthy reef ecosystems, they can also reduce underwater visibility. That's why we choose snorkeling sites sheltered by surrounding islands, where the water is typically calmer, clearer, and offers a much more enjoyable snorkeling experience.

Rain itself has very little impact on underwater visibility. A brief tropical shower rarely changes what you'll see beneath the surface. Strong winds, rough seas, and plankton-rich currents have a much greater influence, which is why choosing the right snorkeling location each day is far more important than simply checking whether rain is in the forecast.

That's why we don't follow a fixed itinerary. Every morning, we assess the latest wind direction, sea conditions, currents, and underwater visibility before selecting the reef that offers the safest conditions and the best possible snorkeling experience for our guests.

If your dream is to snorkel among hundreds of tropical reef fish, Gam Ghi Reef remains one of the best places in Phu Quoc - even during the rainy season when sea conditions are favorable.

Although its coral diversity isn't as extensive as reefs like Hon Roi or the best dry-season reefs, Gam Ghi offers an unforgettable experience for beginners, families, and anyone who simply enjoys swimming through large schools of fish. Sergeant majors, damselfish, fusiliers, and many other colorful reef species often gather in the shallow water, creating the feeling of snorkeling inside a natural aquarium.

Because Gam Ghi is more exposed to the southwest monsoon, we only visit when sea conditions are calm enough to ensure safe and enjoyable snorkeling. When accessible, however, it's one of our favorite places to introduce first-time snorkelers to Phu Quoc's vibrant marine life.
