Looking for the best snorkeling in Phu Quoc? The answer depends on when you visit.

Unlike many destinations where the same snorkeling spots are recommended year-round, Phu Quoc's underwater conditions change with the seasons. Wind direction, waves, currents, and underwater visibility all influence which reefs offer the best experience on any given day.

This guide is based on our daily experience operating small group and private snorkeling tours around Phu Quoc. Instead of listing every reef around the island, we've selected the locations we visit most often because they consistently provide healthy coral reefs, excellent marine life, and the best snorkeling conditions during each season.

Whether you're a first-time snorkeler, traveling with family, or simply looking for the island's healthiest coral reefs, this guide will help you choose the right snorkeling area for your trip.

Over the years, we've snorkeled these reefs hundreds of times while guiding both private and small-group tours around Phu Quoc.

If Hon Kim Quy Reef is accessible, it's almost always our first choice. It consistently offers healthy coral formations, excellent underwater visibility, and an enjoyable experience for both first-time snorkelers and experienced ocean lovers.

Of course, no reef is perfect every day. That's why we choose snorkeling locations based on the season and daily sea conditions rather than following the same itinerary year-round.

⭐ Best Reef for Swimming with Fish (Year-Round)

Gam Ghi Reef

If you're dreaming of snorkeling surrounded by hundreds of tropical fish, Gam Ghi Reef is one of the best places in Phu Quoc.

While its coral diversity isn't as impressive as reefs like Hon Kim Quy or Bat Reef, Gam Ghi offers an unforgettable experience for beginners and families. Large schools of sergeant majors, damselfish, and other colorful reef fish often gather in shallow water, creating the feeling of swimming inside a living aquarium.

Its calm, shallow conditions also make it one of the easiest places for first-time snorkelers to gain confidence in the water.

Reef by Reef: Our Top Picks in Detail

Let's take a closer look at each of these reefs, starting with our #1 recommendation.

Hon Kim Quy Reef – Best Overall Snorkeling Reef in Phu Quoc

📸 Hon Kim Quy Reef Gallery

Every photo in this gallery was taken by our guides during real snorkeling tours at Hon Kim Quy Reef. No stock images—just authentic moments showcasing the healthy coral reefs, diverse marine life, and underwater landscapes you can experience when conditions allow.

If we could recommend only one snorkeling reef in Phu Quoc, Hon Kim Quy Reef would be our choice.

After guiding hundreds of snorkeling tours around the island, this is the reef we trust the most for its consistently healthy coral, outstanding underwater visibility, and exceptional marine life. Whether you're snorkeling for the first time or have years of experience, Hon Kim Quy offers one of the most complete underwater experiences in Phu Quoc.

Rather than being a single snorkeling site, Hon Kim Quy consists of several reef sections. During our tours, we mainly explore U-Turn Reef and North East Reef, selecting the best location based on daily sea conditions, underwater visibility, and guest safety.

📍 At a Glance

Its diverse underwater landscapes mean that every section of the reef feels different. Whether you're interested in coral gardens, sea anemone fields, tropical fish, underwater photography, or simply enjoying a relaxed snorkeling session, Hon Kim Quy consistently delivers one of the best experiences in Phu Quoc.

🪸 What Makes This Reef Special?

Hon Kim Quy is not a single reef but a collection of interconnected reef habitats.

As you snorkel, the underwater scenery constantly changes—from shallow coral gardens and rocky reef formations to sandy patches, giant clams, colorful sea anemones, and reef slopes covered with hard and soft corals.

This diversity creates a healthy ecosystem that supports an incredible variety of marine life while making every snorkeling trip feel unique.

  • Clownfish

  • Parrotfish

  • Butterflyfish

  • Angelfish

  • Sergeant Majors

  • Damselfish

  • Giant Clams

  • Sea Stars

  • Squid & Cuttlefish (occasionally)

Because the reef remains healthy, every visit offers new opportunities to discover different marine life.

👨‍👩‍👧 Who Is This Reef Best For?

Hon Kim Quy is one of the most versatile snorkeling reefs in Phu Quoc.

It's an excellent choice for:

  • First-time snorkelers

  • Families with children

  • Couples

  • Underwater photographers

  • Experienced snorkelers

  • Recreational freedivers

Different sections of the reef offer varying depths and underwater terrain, allowing everyone to enjoy the reef at their own pace.

🌤 Seasonal Conditions

Season

Conditions

November–April

⭐ Best time to visit. Calm seas, excellent visibility, and access to both U-Turn Reef and North East Reef.

May–October

Usually inaccessible because of rough seas. During this period, no side of the island is sufficiently protected, and it is dangerous to attempt to approach the reef.

💡 Local Tip

We don't visit Hon Kim Quy every day-and that's intentional.

The reef is exposed to seasonal winds, so we only include it in our itinerary when sea conditions provide excellent visibility and safe snorkeling.

Safety always comes first. If conditions aren't suitable, we'll choose another reef where our guests can enjoy a safer and more comfortable experience.

Whenever Hon Kim Quy is accessible, however, it's almost always our first recommendation.

U-Turn Reef

Best for: Coral diversity, healthy reef ecosystems & underwater exploration

U-Turn Reef is one of the healthiest coral sections of Hon Kim Quy and one of our favorite places to explore Phu Quoc's reef ecosystems.

Like many reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, U-Turn Reef was significantly affected by the recent El Niño-related coral bleaching event. Today, however, nature is slowly reclaiming the reef.

With every season, we continue to observe new coral growth and improving reef health—a remarkable example of how resilient coral ecosystems can be when given time and favorable conditions.

📍 At a Glance

  • Typical depth: 1–8 m

  • Visibility: Excellent

  • Best for: Coral enthusiasts, advanced snorkelers, underwater photographers & recreational freedivers

🪸 What Makes It Unique?

U-Turn Reef is known for its impressive hard coral diversity and dramatic underwater terrain.

Large coral gardens are interspersed with granite boulders, rocky ridges, small caves, natural swim-throughs, and sandy channels that create a constantly changing underwater landscape.

Large colonies of Acropora, Goniopora, Diploastrea, Lobophyllia, Montipora, Porites, Pavona, and Turbinaria provide habitat for countless reef fish, while occasional sea fans add even more diversity to the reef.

📸 Best Experience

If you enjoy exploring coral formations rather than simply swimming with fish, U-Turn Reef is difficult to beat.

Its varied topography, healthy coral communities, and constantly changing scenery make it one of our favorite locations for underwater photography, recreational freediving, and relaxed snorkeling.

💡 Local Tip

When North East Reef isn't accessible, U-Turn Reef is usually our first alternative-and it never disappoints.

Its sheltered position often provides calmer conditions during windy weather, making it an excellent choice during the transition between the dry and rainy seasons. Even when other reefs become uncomfortable, U-Turn Reef often remains enjoyable thanks to its natural protection and healthy coral ecosystem.

North East Reef

Best for: Sea anemones, clownfish, marine life & underwater photography

When conditions allow, North East Reef is our favorite section of Hon Kim Quy.

While U-Turn Reef is defined by its coral diversity, North East Reef is all about marine life. Healthy coral formations, large schools of tropical reef fish, and one of the most impressive sea anemone fields we regularly visit around Phu Quoc create one of the island's most memorable snorkeling experiences.

📍 At a Glance

  • Typical depth: 1–8 m

  • Visibility: Excellent

  • Best for: Marine life, underwater photography, families & recreational freedivers

🌊 What Makes It Unique?

North East Reef is home to one of the largest populations of magnificent sea anemones (Heteractis magnifica) that we regularly encounter around Phu Quoc.

Depending on the season and underwater lighting, you'll find anemones in shades of purple, pink, green, white, and brown, creating a colorful underwater landscape unlike anywhere else we snorkel.

These anemone gardens provide shelter for dozens of resident clownfish living in a fascinating symbiotic relationship. While the clownfish gain protection among the anemone's tentacles, they help keep their host clean and provide nutrients in return.

Surrounding the anemones are healthy hard and soft corals, dramatic rocky formations, and large schools of tropical reef fish, making North East Reef one of the richest and most photogenic snorkeling sites in Phu Quoc.

📸 Best Experience

Floating above colorful sea anemone gardens while watching clownfish dart between the tentacles is one of the most unforgettable snorkeling experiences in Phu Quoc.

Combined with excellent visibility, healthy coral formations, and abundant marine life, North East Reef is one of our favorite locations for underwater photography and relaxed exploration.

💡 Local Tip

When sea conditions are calm, North East Reef is almost always our first choice within Hon Kim Quy.

If wind or waves affect this side of the reef, we simply move to the more sheltered U-Turn Reef. This flexibility allows us to choose the best snorkeling conditions each day while keeping safety as our highest priority.

🚤 Explore Hon Kim Quy Reef

If sea conditions allow, Hon Kim Quy is almost always our first choice. We choose the best section of the reef each day based on weather, visibility, and safety to ensure the best possible snorkeling experience.

Bat Reef (Hon Dơi) – Best Coral Diversity in Phu Quoc

📸 Bat Reef Gallery

Every photo in this gallery was taken by our guides during real snorkeling tours at Bat Reef (Hon Dơi). The images highlight one of Phu Quoc's most diverse coral ecosystems, featuring colorful hard and soft corals, sea fans, and the rich marine life that makes this reef so special.

If you're passionate about coral reefs, Bat Reef is one of the most rewarding snorkeling locations in Phu Quoc.

While Hon Kim Quy is our best overall snorkeling reef, Bat Reef stands out for its exceptional coral diversity. Large hard coral colonies, colorful soft corals, sea fans, and varied underwater terrain create one of the richest reef ecosystems we regularly visit.

Its combination of healthy coral communities, diverse underwater landscapes, and occasional encounters with rare reef species also makes it one of our favorite locations for underwater photography and recreational freediving.

Bat Reef is our own name for this location - you may also find it referred to as Outer Reef, Nudibranch Garden, or Southeast Reef.

📍 At a Glance

  • Location: Southern An Thoi Archipelago

  • Best season: November–April (Dry Season)

  • Typical depth: 1–8 meters

  • Visibility: Good to Very Good (naturally lower than Hon Kim Quy due to higher plankton levels)

  • Coral diversity: Excellent

  • Marine life: Excellent

  • Best for: Coral lovers, underwater photographers, recreational freedivers & adventurous snorkelers

  • Access: Speedboat

⭐ Why Visit Bat Reef?

Bat Reef is one of the most biologically diverse coral reefs we regularly explore around Phu Quoc.

Instead of offering just one highlight, the reef combines extensive hard coral gardens, colorful soft corals, impressive gorgonian sea fans, dramatic granite boulders, reef slopes, and abundant marine life within a relatively small area.

It's also one of the few reefs where we occasionally encounter species that are rarely seen elsewhere around Phu Quoc, including the Longfin Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus) and Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides).

🌊 Exploring Bat Reef

Bat Reef isn't a single uniform reef. Each side offers a different underwater landscape, allowing us to choose the best section depending on sea conditions and visibility.

West Side

The western side is shallow (approximately 1–3 meters) and ideal for relaxed snorkeling. Extensive table corals, large Porites colonies, Pavona, colorful reef fish, and occasional sea anemones make this an excellent area for beginners and underwater photography.

North Side

At depths of around 2–6 meters, the reef gradually transitions into an ecosystem dominated by soft corals and gorgonians. Here you'll commonly encounter whip corals, leather corals, mushroom leather corals, sea rods, and beautiful sea fans gently swaying with the current.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to observe whip corals at snorkeling depth. Around most of Phu Quoc they usually occur much deeper, but at Bat Reef they can often be found at only about three meters below the surface.

East Side

The eastern side is our favorite.

Massive granite boulders rise from shallow coral gardens before dropping into steeper reef slopes covered with healthy colonies of Acropora, Porites, Lobophyllia, Platygyra, Turbinaria, and many other reef-building corals.

The rock walls are decorated with colorful soft corals, finger leather corals, mushroom leather corals, sun corals, sea rods, and sea fans, while deeper sections often attract large schools of tropical reef fish.

Depending on the sunlight and water conditions, the reef displays remarkable shades of green, red, yellow, purple, and orange, making it one of the most colorful snorkeling sites we visit around Phu Quoc.

📸 Best Experience

Bat Reef rewards patient snorkelers.

Rather than searching for a single attraction, slow down and let the reef reveal itself. Every few meters you'll discover different coral formations, colors, textures, and marine habitats, making Bat Reef one of the most fascinating places in Phu Quoc for underwater photography, recreational freediving, and anyone who appreciates healthy coral ecosystems.

💡 Local Tip

The southern side of Bat Reef is permanently exposed to open sea conditions and isn't suitable for snorkeling.

Instead, we choose between the western, northern, and eastern sections depending on the weather, sea conditions, and underwater visibility to provide the safest and most enjoyable snorkeling experience for our guests.

🪸 Explore Bat Reef

Bat Reef is one of our favorite destinations for coral lovers, underwater photographers, and recreational freedivers. When conditions are suitable, we often include it in our snorkeling itineraries.

📸 Buom Reef Gallery

Every photo in this gallery was taken by our guides during real snorkeling tours at Buom Reef. Explore the reef's calm lagoons, healthy coral gardens, sea anemones, and abundant tropical fish exactly as we experience them with our guests.

If you're looking for calm water, healthy coral reefs, and an easy, enjoyable snorkeling experience, Buom Reef is one of the best places to visit in Phu Quoc.

Unlike reefs known for steep drop-offs or dramatic underwater terrain, Buom Reef is defined by two naturally protected crescent-shaped lagoons. These sheltered areas create calm conditions, making the reef an excellent choice for beginners, families, underwater photographers, and anyone who simply wants to enjoy snorkeling at a relaxed pace.

Healthy coral gardens, scattered granite boulders, abundant marine life, and colorful sea anemones make Buom Reef one of the most versatile snorkeling locations we regularly visit during the dry season.

📍 At a Glance

  • Location: Southern An Thoi Archipelago

  • Best season: November–April (Dry Season)

  • Typical depth: 1–8 meters

  • Visibility: Very Good (slightly lower than Hon Kim Quy due to naturally higher plankton levels)

  • Water conditions: Usually calm inside the protected lagoons

  • Coral health: Excellent

  • Marine life: Excellent

  • Best for: Beginners, families, relaxed snorkeling, underwater photographers & recreational freedivers

  • Access: Speedboat

⭐ Why Visit Buom Reef?

Buom Reef offers one of the most relaxing snorkeling experiences in Phu Quoc.

Instead of long reef walls or deep underwater cliffs, you'll explore two sheltered lagoons filled with healthy coral gardens, dramatic granite boulders, sandy channels, and colorful marine life.

The calm water makes it easy to spend long periods exploring without feeling rushed, while the varied underwater landscape ensures there's always something new to discover. It's one of those reefs where you naturally slow down, observe more, and appreciate the incredible complexity of a healthy tropical reef ecosystem.

🌊 What Makes It Unique?

The reef is best known for its extensive coral gardens.

Large fields of Echinopora lamellosa and Pavona frondifera dominate many parts of the reef, accompanied by massive colonies of Diploastrea, scattered Fungia, healthy patches of Goniopora, and numerous colonies of Porites, Acropora, and other reef-building corals.

Soft corals add another layer of diversity, including Sarcophyton, Sinularia, sea rods, and occasional sea fans growing among the granite boulders.

Sea anemones are scattered throughout the reef, sometimes appearing as individual colonies and elsewhere forming beautiful gardens of white, purple, and pink anemones inhabited by resident clownfish.

The underwater scenery constantly alternates between coral gardens, sandy patches, and granite formations, creating one of the most visually diverse snorkeling environments around Phu Quoc.

🐠 Marine Life

Buom Reef supports an impressive variety of tropical reef fish.

Regular sightings include:

  • Damselfish

  • Sergeant Majors

  • Parrotfish

  • Wrasses

  • Groupers

  • Rabbitfish

  • Fusiliers

  • Gobies

  • Needlefish

  • Copperband Butterflyfish

  • Butterflyfish

  • Moray Eels

The calm lagoons also provide excellent opportunities to observe fish behavior at close range, making Buom Reef particularly enjoyable for underwater photography.

📸 Best Experience

Buom Reef is best explored slowly.

Drift through the sheltered lagoons, weave between granite boulders, and take time to appreciate the extensive coral gardens below. Rather than chasing individual marine species, this is a reef where the overall scenery becomes the highlight.

For photographers and recreational freedivers, the combination of calm water, healthy corals, colorful fish, and natural light creates outstanding underwater conditions.

🌅 Why We Prefer the Afternoon

Although Buom Reef is beautiful throughout the day, we almost always recommend visiting in the afternoon whenever possible.

During the morning, many large island-hopping boats include Buom Reef in their itinerary, making it one of the busiest snorkeling locations in the An Thoi Archipelago.

Later in the day, the atmosphere changes completely. As the crowds leave, the lagoons become peaceful again, marine life becomes noticeably more active, and the warm afternoon sunlight enhances the reef's natural colors.

It's also one of our favorite places to finish the day before cruising back through the islands during sunset.

💡 Local Tip

Buom Reef isn't a reef that impresses because it's extreme.

It impresses because everything simply works together-calm water, healthy coral gardens, abundant marine life, dramatic granite boulders, and easy snorkeling conditions.

If you're looking for a relaxed underwater experience where you can truly enjoy the reef without strong currents or challenging conditions, Buom Reef is one of the best choices in Phu Quoc.
